Heart Attack is called as myocardial infarction in medical terms.

Heart :

The heart is a muscular organ in humans and other animals, which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system. Blood provides the body with oxygen and nutrients, as well as assists in the removal of metabolic wastes. A heart attack is the death of a part of heart muscle due to  a loss of blood supply. This is called as myocardial infarction in medical terms . The blood is usually cut off when an artery supplying the heart muscle is blocked by a blood clot(thrombus).

How to know you are having a heart attack?

• Chest pain which is occurs in mid chest and towards left. The pain radiates to left shoulder or arm. Sometime pain may be absent but it gives a sense of  discomfort, pressure, squeezing, or fullness in the chest that lasts several minutes or resolves then returns
• pain or discomfort in the arms, neck, back, stomach, or jaw
• sudden shortness of breath

Other signs can include a cold sweat, a sick or nauseous feeling, In diabetics the chest pain may be absent in a heart attack . This is called as silent heart attack .

Primary PCI :

Primary PCI consists of urgent procedure in CATHLAB which includes  balloon angioplasty (with or without stenting),   to open the infarct-related artery during  Heart attack or acute myocardial infarction. This is a life saving procedure in which the block in the artery is removed. Heart attack lso can be treated with medicines like fibrinolytics which are used I.V to dissolve the clot.

Remember:

1. Never hesitate to take n ECG and consult a doctor when you suspect heart attack. 2. If it is diagnosed as  heart attack after taking ECG , shift the patient quickly to a hospital where Primary PCI can be done. 3.You get good results as  early as the procedure is done. As there is late in doing the procedure you may have more complications and even loose the patient. 4.Always know where is the nearest center where heart attack is treated with Primary PCI. This can save the  life . 5.In this case – Time is muscle: Early treatment/procedure saves the heart muscle from damage. There is always chance that the heart function can be normal if treated early.
